What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is caused by the body’s reaction to a perceived threat or danger. When there is something to be afraid of, or when we believe there is something to be afraid of, our body, or more precisely, our brain, prepares our body to go into ‘fight or flight’ mode.

This could be a physical danger, but more often than not, feeling anxious is our emotional response to fears about insecurity or threats we think exist, like other people’s expectations of us or our own expectations of ourselves.

Anxiety separates us from ourselves. We lose sight of who we truly are and become trapped in the mind-prison of fear. Attempts to rationalise our experiences with logic and reason are unlikely to bring us any relief. However, counselling, whether in-person or via online therapy, is an excellent anxiety treatment.

We may feel uneasy and experience physical symptoms like dizziness and chest pain when we feel anxious. Some people’s anxiety may become so severe as to cause a panic attack, in which they feel paralysed by fear and exhibit severe physical symptoms.

COUNSELLING FOR ANXIETY

What is a Panic Attack?

During a panic attack, the body experiences a surge of fear and panic, resulting in severe physical and mental symptoms. They can be terrifying, particularly if you have never experienced one before.

When our bodies overreact to stress and anxiety, it results in panic attacks. The majority of attacks last between five and twenty minutes, but some have been reported to last up to an hour. Although it may not feel like it at the time, panic attacks do not harm your physical health.

You might start avoiding specific situations after an attack in case they lead to another one. As you begin to avoid more and more things and develop anxiety about panic attacks, this can spiral out of control.

How Does Therapy Help With Anxiety and Panic Attacks?

Therapy for anxiety and coping with panic attacks can be helpful when the feeling of dread or worry is persistent.

Therapy is a space where you can learn how to cope with and manage the physical symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks when they occur. This helps you realise that you can control it instead of it controlling you. Most importantly, therapy is a space where you can figure out what is causing your anxiety.

It is critical to remember that anxiety is a symptom. It appears as a result of something else, and therapy can assist in exploring and discovering what that is.
